A graduation ceremony is one of the most highly anticipated and joyful events of the year at America’s First Rescue Mission. Each graduation candidate came to the Mission because an adversity, situation or substance had some level of control over their daily functioning. For most of the graduates, it has been a long time since they have experienced success. They are far more familiar with failure and disappointment. That is why we make such a big deal out of celebrating the hard work, follow-through and new hope of our graduates. Each made a decision to seek new direction and purpose, and Graduation Day stamps a proud "Mission Accomplished" on their life's resume.
The journey through the Residential Recovery Program is not not easy. The rigorous program includes long days filled with literacy classes, computer training, pastoral counseling, Bible studies, 12-Step groups, work therapy and other activities.
The spiritual growth program is meant to enlarge residents’ faith and affirm their personal worth. You can hear the fruit of this as each graduate takes his turn at the podium to share a testimonial. The themes are most often reconciliation with family, staying clean, and completing something for the first time.
As a faith-based ministry, we recognize that enduring help and hope for those in need come from programs that are centered on the power of God’s love. The cry of many at our door is best expressed by Psalm 71:2, “Rescue me and deliver me in your righteousness; turn your ear to me and save me.” The LORD is still listening to and answering cries for help from those who come to New York City Rescue Mission.
Graduation marks a commencement for these men as they return to the community to live productive and purposeful lives. We welcome people from the local community to come witness firsthand what is taking place in individual lives at the Mission and to encourage these graduates as they transition into the community.
“I am grateful for the faithful and generous support from contributors who recognize the value of this work of the LORD,” said James VarnHagen, Executive Director. “They are partners and are investing in reclaiming the lives of people who have been hurt.”
