The Great Thanksgiving Banquet

NY1's Elizabeth Kaledin serves a guest at a past Great Thanksgiving BanquetAt NYCRM we know how lonely the holidays can be, especially for those who are alone on the streets.  Since 1999 the Mission has hosted a Great Thanksgiving Banquet on the Monday before Thanksgiving Day.

This event has increasingly been a successful attempt to reach out to the city's forgotten population by providing them with Gospel entertainment and three-course turkey dinners on elegant table settings.  It also provides an opportunity for New Yorkers who have been given much to share their plenty with those who have very little.

We generally serve about 1,000 banquet-style meals throughout the day.  On November 22, 2010 we served 1,028 turkey dinners to grateful guests.

Our guests consist of women with children living in city shelters, individuals living on the streets and in parks, homeless veterans, and others with special needs.  Guests enjoy VIP treatment from volunteers like NY1’s Elizabeth Kaledin (pictured above) at our Annual Great Thanksgiving Banquet.  The next banquet will be November 21, 2011.

After volunteering at the GTB, Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services, Linda Gibbs, said, "On this holiday New Yorkers should give special thanks to the New York City Rescue Mission for its important work."

One way you may support this event is by giving
financially to feed hungry and homeless New Yorkers.  If you are able to sponsor a table for $1,000, please email our Director of Development, Tom Hall, or call him at 212-226-6214 ext 121.  Another way to help is by donating gifts for the hundreds of adult and children's gift bags we hand out.  You may also volunteer, though space is limited and groups normally sign up to volunteer for this event far in advance.
