It is estimated that each night in New York City nearly 35,000 men, women and children seek refuge in overnight facilities (according to NYC DHS website, accessed 2/19/2008). New York City Rescue Mission (NYCRM) has worked to relieve the City from a portion of this burden by providing clothes, food, lodging, spiritual guidance and recovery opportunities, to thousands of homeless people in New York City for over 135 years. Mayor Michael Bloomberg recently remarked that the Mission’s “demonstrated commitment to improving the quality of life for homeless families throughout New York and its dedication to ensure these people lead fulfilling, self-sufficient lives is commendable.”

NYCRM offers vital resources to help people escape the anguish of homelessness. It addresses the current needs and offers long-term solutions to poverty and homelessness through programs such as food services, emergency lodging and care, long-term residential recovery, preparation for self-sufficiency, work therapy and after-care counseling. Moreover, the program gives people hope and a chance for a better future.

NYCRM was founded in 1872 by Jerry and Maria McAuley. Rescued from their lives of crime and alcoholism to follow Christ, the McAuleys became servants to the homeless by opening AMERICA’S FIRST Rescue Mission, known as Helping Hand for Men. The mission, which began as a refuge for the “unworthy poor,” has since expanded to provide a broad range of critical services and programs to homeless people in New York City.

Services rendered during the 2007 calendar year include the following:
122,027 Hot Meals Served
44,248 Food Pantry/Other Distributions
32,480 Nights of Individual Lodging
22,419 Articles of Clothing Issued
5,563 Learning Center Hours
67,076 Program & Counseling Hours
529 Medical Clinic & Social Service Hours

NYCRM is substantially supported by caring individuals, churches, foundations, businesses and other organizations. Less than two percent of the Mission’s revenue comes from city, state and federal funds. Net gain includes donations for capital expenditures for Kicthen/Dining Room renovation project in progress.* Our audited financial statements for FY ending June 30, 2007 reports the following:
