SOUPer Bowl Sunday

Each year on Super Bowl Sunday, dozens of New York's homeless assemble in the shelter's chapel after an early dinner to watch the big game on a large screen TV. At this alcohol-free "party", guests enjoy coffee, soda, snacks and soup. The event has grown into SOUPer Bowl Week, a city-wide partnership between chefs, celebs and NYC Rescue Mission to bring top-notch soup and service to the marginalized.

In addition to enjoying warm soup and shelter on a cold winter day, these men are offered a supportive community environment in which to forget their cares, if only for a few hours. "I've been in other shelters, and they wouldn't do something like this—especially with staff, residents and transients all hangin' out together," said one guest. This event affords men an evening of camaraderie and fun, joys sorely lacking in a life spent on the streets.
